WHAT IS THE ASSIST PROJECT?
Spread smiles this season and connect with your local cancer community through the Assist Project. You and your team will create meaningful cards and deliver them to patients who may need a little extra cheer in their day.
WHY PARTICIPATE?
Coaching involves more than just the Xs and Os. It’s about developing the whole player. Implementing the Assist Project into your program teaches valuable life lessons such as:
- The importance of spreading positivity, selflessness, and helping others
- The power of teamwork to make an impact
- The ability to put oneself in the shoes of another person
“Patient noted that it felt good to know others were out there caring about them without knowing them personally and wanted to thank you for choosing our center to share a very special gift!”
-Dori Tompkins, Volunteer Education Development Coordinator, KU Cancer Center Westwood
WHAT DO WE DO
STEP 1: GATHER SUPPLIES
Before buying any materials, see if team parents have any you can use. Anything works!
STEP 2: SET A DATE AND TIME
Designate a specific date and time where you and your team will come together and create your cards for cancer patients in your community.
STEP 3: DELIVER YOUR CARDS
Call a local cancer center or hospital to ensure that they will accept your cards before you drop them off.
YOUR CARD: 3 KEY COMPONENTS
- Get Creative
- Make a pop-up card
- Draw or paint a picture on your card
- Use decorations (stickers, pipe cleaner, etc.)
- Tell them a little about yourself
- Include your first name, school/club name and age
- Tell them about your hobbies
- Add a picture of yourself
- Write an uplifting message
- Tell a joke
- Use encouraging words
- Let them know you’re thinking of them
Reminders
- Avoid using any religious sentiments
- Avoid references to their health (ie. “Feel better soon”)
- Avoid including detailed personal information (ie. address or phone number)
